Common Food-Safe Packaging Materials

1. Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP)

Commonly used for snacks, biscuits, and dry food packaging. BOPP complies with Indian food contact regulations when produced with food-grade additives.

2. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)

PET films offer excellent barrier properties, good tensile strength, and superior printability. They’re food-safe, BPA-free, and widely approved for direct food contact applications. Used in the outer layer of multi-layer laminates for premium food packaging.

3. Polyethylene (PE)

Low-Density PE (LDPE) and Linear Low-Density PE (LLDPE) are food-safe sealant layers used in flexible packaging laminates. They provide excellent heat-seal properties and are safe for direct food contact. PE is used as the inner layer in most food pouches.

4. Aluminium Foil

Aluminium foil provides the ultimate barrier against moisture, oxygen, light, and odours. It’s food-safe and widely used in spice packaging, ready-to-eat meal pouches, and products requiring long shelf life. When laminated between other films, it provides exceptional protection.

5. Metallized Films

Metallized PET or BOPP films provide many of aluminium foil’s barrier properties at lower cost and weight. They’re food-safe when produced with appropriate grades and are increasingly popular for snack packaging where a premium metallic appearance is desired.

FSSAI Compliance for Food Packaging in India

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has stringent regulations for food contact packaging materials under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018. Key requirements include:
