  • 5 Costly Packaging Design Mistakes Indian Food Brands Make (And How to Fix Them)

Your packaging is the first thing customers see. Get it wrong and they walk away. Get it right and they buy. Yet Indian food brands keep making the same costly packaging design mistakes. In this guide, we reveal 5 common errors that hurt sales and damage brand trust. More importantly, we show you exactly how to fix each one.

Why Packaging Design Mistakes Cost You Sales

In India’s crowded food market, packaging is your silent salesperson. It sits on retail shelves and competes for attention. Consumers spend less than 3 seconds deciding whether to pick up your product. A bad design eliminates you from the conversation.

At Laxmi Narayan Enterprise, we have printed pouches for over 200 food brands across Kolkata and beyond. The brands that succeed share one trait: they get their packaging right from day one. The ones that struggle often repeat the same avoidable mistakes.

Mistake 1: Cluttered Design That Confuses Customers

This is the most common packaging design mistake in India. Brands try to say everything on the front of the pack. They cram logos, taglines, product benefits, certifications, and contact details all into one space. The result: a messy, cluttered package that overwhelms customers.

When customers cannot find the key information quickly, they put your product back on the shelf. They move to the next option.

How to fix it: Use a clear visual hierarchy. Put your brand name and product type at the top in large, bold font. Add one key benefit or tagline below it. Move detailed information to the back. Leave white space so the design can breathe. Less is always more.

Mistake 2: Ignoring the Target Audience

Many brand owners design packaging based on personal taste. They choose colours, fonts, and images they like. But the package is not for them. It is for their customers.

A premium snack brand targeting young urban professionals needs sleek, minimalist packaging with dark tones and clean typography. A traditional namkeen brand selling to families in tier 2 cities needs warm colours, bold fonts, and cultural cues that feel familiar.

How to fix it: Define your buyer persona before starting any design work. Understand their age, income level, shopping habits, and preferences. Then design the package to appeal directly to them.

Mistake 3: Poor Material Selection That Fails on Shelves

Some brands pick packaging materials that look premium but cannot survive the supply chain. In India, products travel long distances through varying temperatures and humidity levels. A pouch that leaks, tears, or fades on arrival destroys customer trust forever.

We have seen food brands choose thin films to save costs. The result: broken seal integrity, aroma loss, and product spoilage before the product reaches retailers.

How to fix it: Choose the right film structure for your product. For moisture-sensitive items like chips and namkeen, use metallised BOPP with a minimum thickness of 90 gsm. For oily products like ghee and pickles, use PET/PE layers with strong seal integrity. Always run shelf-life testing before full production.

Mistake 4: Missing Regulatory Labels and FSSAI Compliance

FSSAI has strict packaging and labelling rules for food products in India. Your package must display the FSSAI logo and 14-digit licence number, Veg or Non Veg symbol, nutritional information, ingredient list, MRP, net quantity, manufacturing date, and batch number.

Brands that skip these details face penalties and product seizures. Some miss the Front of Pack Labelling (FOPL) requirements for sugar, salt, and fat content that came into effect in 2024.

How to fix it: Work with a packaging printer who understands FSSAI compliance. At LNE, every pouch design goes through a compliance checklist before going to print. We ensure all mandatory labels are in the correct font sizes and positions.

Mistake 5: Inconsistent Branding Across Products

When a brand launches multiple SKUs, each package should look like it belongs to the same family. Yet many Indian food brands have no consistent colour palette, typography, or logo placement across their range.

Customers cannot recognise your brand on shelves. Your brand recall stays weak. Competitors with consistent packaging win more shelf share.

How to fix it: Create a brand packaging guideline document. Lock in 2-3 brand colours, one or two fonts, and a standard logo placement. Use colour blocking to differentiate SKUs while keeping the overall look consistent. For example, your masala range can use red tones while your namkeen range uses blue tones, both under the same brand identity.

Bonus: Overlooked Detail That Kills Sales

Many brands ignore print proofing. They approve designs on screen and send them to print. The printed result never matches the screen.

How to fix it: Always ask for a physical proof before full production. Check colour accuracy, text alignment, and image sharpness. Confirm FSSAI label placement. Small corrections before printing save thousands in wasted material.

Ready to Fix Your Packaging?

Bad packaging design costs you sales every day. Good packaging design builds your brand, drives repeat purchases, and commands premium pricing.

At Laxmi Narayan Enterprise, we combine 30 years of flexible packaging expertise with modern print technology. We help food brands design and print pouches that sell. From structure selection to FSSAI-compliant artwork to print proofing, we handle every detail.
